The conditional: politeness, wishes and rumours

Vorrei, dovresti, sarebbe — four everyday jobs of the condizionale.

Forming it

Take the future stem and add -ei, -esti, -ebbe, -emmo, -este, -ebbero: parlerei, prenderesti, finirebbe. Irregular future stems carry over: andrei, avrei, sarei, vorrei, potrei, dovrei, verrei.

Four common uses

1. Politeness: Vorrei un caffè. Potrebbe aiutarmi?

2. Advice: Dovresti dormire di più. (You should sleep more.)

3. Wishes: Mi piacerebbe visitare la Sicilia.

4. Unconfirmed news, especially in journalism: Secondo la polizia, il ladro sarebbe fuggito in moto. (The thief allegedly fled by motorbike.)

Past conditional for 'future in the past'

Where English says 'He said he would come', Italian uses the past conditional: Ha detto che sarebbe venuto. The simple conditional here is a very common learner error.

  • Mi ha promesso che mi avrebbe chiamato.
She promised me she would call me.
  • Avrei voluto restare.
I would have liked to stay.

Common mistakes

Ha detto che verrebbe.
Ha detto che sarebbe venuto.

Future in the past uses the past conditional.

Voglio un caffè. (ordering)
Vorrei un caffè.

The conditional is the polite way to order.

Andarei
Andrei

Andare's future stem is andr-.
