Si impersonale and si passivante

Si mangia bene, si vendono case — how Italian says 'one', 'people' and 'is done'.

Si impersonale: 'one / people / you'

Si + third-person singular verb expresses a general subject: In Italia si mangia tardi (In Italy people eat late). Come si dice…? (How do you say…?).

  • Qui si parla italiano.
    Italian is spoken here.
  • Non si fuma.
    No smoking.

Si passivante: the verb agrees with the thing

With a transitive verb and a direct object, the object becomes the grammatical subject, so the verb agrees with it: si vende la casa, si vendono le case.

This is why signs say Si affittano camere (rooms for rent), with a plural verb.

Adjectives and compound tenses

With essere or other linking verbs in the impersonal, adjectives are plural: Quando si è giovani… (When one is young…).

Compound tenses use essere: Si è parlato molto. With a si passivante the participle agrees: Si sono vendute tutte le case.

Common mistakes

Si vende biglietti.
Si vendono biglietti.

The verb agrees with the plural object.

Quando si è stanco…
Quando si è stanchi…

Adjectives after impersonal si essere are plural.

Si ha mangiato bene.
Si è mangiato bene.

Compound tenses with si always use essere.
