Why “in the” becomes nel, nella, negli — a complete chart and how to read it.
Preposition + article = one word
Five prepositions merge with the definite article that follows them: di, a, da, in, su. The result changes with the article, so you need to know the noun's article first.
| il | lo | l' | la | i | gli | le | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| di | del | dello | dell' | della | dei | degli | delle |
| a | al | allo | all' | alla | ai | agli | alle |
| da | dal | dallo | dall' | dalla | dai | dagli | dalle |
| in | nel | nello | nell' | nella | nei | negli | nelle |
| su | sul | sullo | sull' | sulla | sui | sugli | sulle |
When there's no article
Many set expressions use the bare preposition with no article: in Italia, a casa, in macchina, a scuola, in banca. Adding a modifier often brings the article back (nell'Italia del nord, nella macchina di Luca), though not always: a casa mia.
- Vado in banca.I'm going to the bank.
- Il libro è sul tavolo. The book is on the table.
- Vengo dagli Stati Uniti.I come from the United States.
