Passato prossimo vs. Imperfetto

The most common past-tense puzzle: completed events vs. background and habits.

The core idea

Passato prossimo describes completed actions — things that happened, with a clear start or end. Think of it as the snapshot.

Imperfetto paints the background: ongoing situations, descriptions, feelings, age, time, and repeated habits in the past. Think of it as the video running behind the snapshot.

Passato prossimoImperfetto
Single, completed eventsOngoing actions in progress
Specific number of timesHabits (“used to”)
Sequence of eventsDescriptions, weather, age, time
Ieri, una volta, all'improvvisoSempre, di solito, mentre, ogni giorno

Using them together

Very often both appear in the same sentence: the imperfetto sets the scene and the passato prossimo interrupts it.

  • Mentre dormivo, è suonato il telefono.
While I was sleeping, the phone rang.
  • Da bambino andavo al mare ogni estate.
As a child I used to go to the beach every summer.
  • L'anno scorso sono andato al mare due volte.
Last year I went to the beach twice.

Verbs that change meaning

Some verbs shift meaning depending on the tense: conoscevo (I knew someone) vs. ho conosciuto (I met someone); sapevo (I knew) vs. ho saputo (I found out); dovevo (I was supposed to) vs. ho dovuto (I had to, and did).

Common mistakes

Quando ho avuto dieci anni…
Quando avevo dieci anni…

Age in the past is a description — imperfetto.

Ieri leggevo un libro intero.
Ieri ho letto un libro intero.

A finished, bounded action takes passato prossimo.
