4 min readDa, per and fa with time
“For” and “ago” in Italian are not what English speakers expect.
Da + present: ongoing actions
For something that started in the past and is still happening, Italian uses the present + da: studio italiano da due anni (I've been studying Italian for two years).
Per: finished or planned durations
For a closed period, use per (or nothing): ho vissuto a Roma per tre anni (I lived in Rome for three years — and no longer do).
Fa: ago
Fa follows the time expression: tre giorni fa (three days ago), molto tempo fa (a long time ago).
- Abito qui da maggio.I've lived here since May.
- Sono arrivato un'ora fa.I arrived an hour ago.
Common mistakes
