Surprising uses of the future

Italians use the future for guesses, and the present for plans. Here's how.

The present often replaces the future

For near, planned events, Italian prefers the present: domani vado a Roma (tomorrow I'm going to Rome). The future sounds more formal or distant.

Futuro di probabilità

The future expresses a guess about the present: Dov'è Luca? — Sarà a casa (He's probably at home). The futuro anteriore guesses about the past: avrà perso il treno (he must have missed the train).

  • Che ore sono? — Saranno le tre.
What time is it? — It must be about three.
  • Quanti anni avrà?
How old do you think he is?

After quando and se

Unlike English, careful Italian uses the future after quando and appena when the main clause is future (the present is common in speech): quando arriverò, ti chiamerò (when I arrive, I'll call you).

Common mistakes

Quando arrivo a Roma, ti chiamerò.
Quando arriverò a Roma, ti chiamerò.

Both clauses are in the future in careful Italian; the present is acceptable in casual speech.

Lui deve essere a casa (as a guess).
Sarà a casa.

Deve essere a casa is fine as a deduction, but the future of probability is the most natural way to guess.
