How “piacere” really works

Italian doesn't say “I like pizza” — it says “pizza is pleasing to me”.

Flip the sentence

With piacere, the thing liked is the grammatical subject, and the person who likes it is an indirect object (mi, ti, gli, le, ci, vi, gli).

So the verb agrees with the thing liked: piace for one thing or an action, piacciono for plural things.

  • Mi piace la pizza.
I like pizza (pizza pleases me).
  • Mi piacciono gli spaghetti.
    I like spaghetti (plural).
  • Ti piace ballare?
    Do you like dancing?
  • A Giulia piacciono i gatti.
    Giulia likes cats.

In the past

Piacere takes essere in compound tenses, and the participle agrees with the thing liked: Mi è piaciuto il film. Mi è piaciuta la cena. Mi sono piaciuti i libri.

Common mistakes

Io piaccio la pizza.
Mi piace la pizza.

Io piaccio means “I am pleasing (to someone)”.

Mi piace i libri.
Mi piacciono i libri.

The verb agrees with the plural subject, i libri.
